    pro's & con"s exposed camgears

im not sure if anyone has done or tried this b4 but i have seen many engine pics where the upper timing belt cover has been modified even taken off all together

apart from looks and the ability to see what condition ur belt is in
    what are the pro's &con's

    so far

    good
    looks
    able to see belt condition
able to spot leaks from cam seals
air flow in the belt area helping to cool
if u hav adj cam gears u wont need to remove cover to access
possibly helping with correcting the timing

    bad
shit might go into the belt area and do some damage
its kinda more exposed to weather conditions so the belt will wear quicker

    thats bout all i got
    anyone got more info
    cheers in advance

mainly the only bad I could think of is the attention from the cops.

you can get yours cut in half or 75/25 and make the top part either a mould of lexan or plexiglass, or some other clear plastic type stuff that you could mould to shape.

then just fab up some mounting/fastening holes, and test it out!

here's a link for more of what I mean:

for a rb motor, but the idea is the same:

Most people do it for cooling on higher power engines...
Having a timing cover can cause unwanted heat.

But in all seriousness its not that big of a difference. Different reports say different things, but i haven't read any major difference.

But as CB mentioned, it's not hard to get one of those clear covers made, so you still get the good looks!

i've love to know aswell hazza...

the disadvantage of clear covers on street cars is how dirty that can (and will) get!

I'd love to show off my adjustable cam gears!

The clear RB Covers made by trust don'tfit already tried that.
I am in the process of cutting away a section of my cover which still enables easy adjustment of the gears and enables the CAS to still be mounted

    Will post pics when done.

When it comes to mounting my CAS I would like something a little more structurely sound than my imagination.

Clean it ............................. You wont have to, the clear covers for the RB dont fit the CA.

    Bullshit.
Its rice an you know it. Stop pretending its more than it is.
The only real question is, do you personally think its worth the defect?

(It is a defect in QLD. My mate got done for it in his Cordia, which doesn't have a camgear cover so the bonnet can close )

wat u said hazza is what i thought
i have seen many cas brackets allowing u to completly remove timing cover
they were on rb series,i think they dont make them for ca18 but who knows??
that is why i wanted to carve up a spare cover i have and try and come up with something decent
ill post some pics when finished and hazza let us see ur results too please

    No.

And on the same subject, in QLD, exposed pod filters are legal as long as they have a metal strap from the body work to the pod (on the afm adaptor).

Doesn't mean you wont get done for it though.

    obviously.

use the concept from the rb one to model a ca one.
